Friends from afar, building bridges, not walls.

We come together here to Chengdu from every continent, as Confucius said we are 'friends from afar'. Vice-Premier, we know that this nation of 1.4 billion has many concerns for its own people. But the future of the world is made more peaceful when we are open to and understand one another.

Please convey to the leaders of this great nation our thanks to China for its commitment to openness at this time and its vision in supporting the work of the Confucius Institute.

When I was a boy, China was known for its Great Wall which some days was visible from space. Today China is known for its bridges and infrastructure. But the most important bridges between people are not made of steel or stone.

So on behalf of the Confucius Institutes, it is my privilege today to thank the people of China for the commitment you have shown to building bridges of understanding between nations.

And I would like to tell you how I think Confucius Institutes can work in future for the benefit of all our peoples.

Learning a language is an act of friendship

Over the last decade, the work of Confucius Institutes has been to support that understanding, especially through teaching Chinese language and culture.

In the Sheffield Confucius Institute we run nearly 200 classes and we have 14,000 people in our city have learned some Chinese with us. Around the world, hundreds of thousands of children have studied in Confucius Classrooms in Africa and Europe, in Asia and America. Communities across the world have seen the dedication and goodwill of China through its teachers, the Chinese staff who are such wonderful ambassadors for your country.

The city of Chengdu-then and now

We are meeting today in the city of Chengdu which is twinned with my own university city of Sheffield.

Like China, this city has changed beyond recognition over my lifetime, and the lives of its people have also changed for the good. The children of Chengdu now have prosperity and opportunities their grandparents could never have imagined.

The workers of Chengdu

Workers who once worked in steel mills now produce cars, planes and trains. Electric cars are sold in what was once 'the land of the bicycle' and around the world.

My hometown - Llwynypia

And it isn't just China that has changed. Our world is changing. This is the town where I was born in the Rhondda Valleyin Wales.

The lives of the workers

Like many parts of China and the world, the lives of the workers who built my home town were hard. Like the people in Chengdu they worked producing steel and coal. And like people right across the world, they hoped for a better life for their children.

Can the Confucius Institute help make a better life for all of our children? I believe it can.

The old factories of Sheffield

This was my university city of Sheffield forty years ago. Like Chengdu it was known for manufacturing. But industry was changing and many lost their work.

A new Industrial Revolution

And this is the same site today - an advanced manufacturing park working with the technologies of the future and making high-skilled jobs for young people working as part of a global supply chain. Who works there? Rolls-Royce, Boeing, Jaguar Land Rover. But also companies from China.

Workers past and future

The model Confucius Institute in Sheffield is part of this. We are working with local companies and the city region to help build bridges between China and the UK. And we work with the Chinese companies and government which wants to learn from us.

Working with China to create prosperity

Our Confucius Institute does help teach Chinese to children and students. But our Confucius Institute has also worked with local companies and helps to build cooperation on shared challenges like healthcare and industrial productivity.

China has a lot to teach the world but the world also needs to care about the interests of China. We have a wonderful opportunity through the friendships and trust we have built through the Confucius Institutes to work together on future challenges and to build a more peaceful world in the process.

A future which unites nations and families

I have a personal interest in the relationship between China and the rest of the world. This is my grandson. He has a British father and a Chinese mother. He has family in London and in Guangzhou.

The Chinese dream is not different to the British Dream, the American Dream or the African Dream. We all want the best for our children and a world in which there will be peace and prosperity for our grandchildren. The Confucius Institutes help build bridges between China and the world which make that possible.

Thank you.
